This is basically the scientific backing for why I lift weights. This is the reason I'm losing weight, aside from cleaning up my diet.
What will resistance training do? Here are the benefits, specifically for fat loss:
1. Supports lean mass over fat mass
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/171110102. Increases your overall metabolic rate
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/165268353. Helps with losing fat tissue
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/208478924. Weight lifting will increase your RESTING metabolic rate. Most people think that doing cardio will increase their metabolism for a while afterwards. While this is technically true, the effect is very low when compared to resistance training.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15561636http://www.exrx.net/ExInfo/Posture.htmlhttp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16036094All of this applies whether you're a guy or girl.
I understand that most of you won't go through and read the articles, but at least check out the abstracts. It's only a paragraph long each, and this stuff is pretty interesting.
Note: this is NOT to say that cardio isn't good for general health. Most people seem to think that to lose weight, cardio is the only answer. That's just not true. Cardio IS ESSENTIAL for overall health, but resistance training seems to be better just for overall quality of life.
Here is an obligatory case. This guy started out doing cardio for the first month, then switched over to doing only resistance training while cleaning up his diet. He did what I'm currently doing now.
